Building Opportunity Brick by Brick: Álvaro Carranza’s Journey from Civil Engineer to Publisher with Life Asset

Life Asset is proud to spotlight Álvaro Carranza Paredes, a civil engineer whose entrepreneurial journey began with a single idea: to make construction education more accessible for Spanish-speaking immigrants like himself. What started as a personal challenge to rebuild a career in a new country soon evolved into a community-focused mission supported by vision, perseverance, and the guidance of Life Asset.

Originally from Bolivia, Álvaro has more than 25 years of experience in construction. But when he moved to the U.S., he faced a difficult transition. Construction techniques, standards, and even the language were unfamiliar. Despite the obstacles, Álvaro knew he didn’t want to leave behind the career he loved.

“Construction techniques here in the U.S. are different from those we use in Bolivia,” Álvaro explains. “So I had to update my knowledge. I had to learn the techniques, regulations, technical standards—everything used here.”

He took matters into his own hands. While learning English, he enrolled in construction courses and absorbed as much as possible. But in doing so, he realized that there were no accessible learning tools for people like him.

He said, “There’s nothing like this in Spanish for people like me. So what if I wrote something in Spanish?”

A Magazine Is Born

Álvaro created a magazine to teach what he was learning. The content included blueprint reading, safety procedures, measurement tips, and more, all in Spanish. With no background in graphic design, he taught himself Photoshop and built the publication from scratch.

“I’m not a graphic designer, but I learned Photoshop and put the magazine together.”

The process wasn’t easy. Álvaro’s first version didn’t meet his expectations, and hiring a designer didn’t go as planned either. But he kept going.

“In the end, I combined our efforts and came up with a final product that I liked,” he says.

The Turning Point: Life Asset

Álvaro was introduced to Life Asset by his sister, an entrepreneur herself, who believed they could help. And she was right.

“She told me, ‘They’ll help you.’ I met with Martha and Ebro, and they believed in my project. Thanks to Life Asset, I’ve made major progress on this.”

Álvaro describes two key benefits of working with Life Asset:

“First, motivation. Life Asset saw value in my project and encouraged me to keep going. Second, Life Asset helped with financial support. I’ve put a lot of time into this, and I needed resources. They helped with Photoshop licenses, transportation, printing costs because everything adds up.”

Before meeting Life Asset, Álvaro felt stuck. With their guidance, he completed and published his magazine.

“Before I met them, the project was kind of stalled. I wasn’t sure what to do next or if it would even work. But I met Martha, and she supported me. Thanks to that, I could finish the magazine and move forward.”

Empowering Others, One Issue at a Time

Each issue is packed with tips, tools, and technical knowledge in Spanish, making it easier for workers to learn and improve communication on the job site. This helps readers pick up industry language and bridge the gap between experience and opportunity.

Looking to the Future

Álvaro’s next step is to expand. He hopes to distribute his magazine across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington D.C., eventually reaching more states where Spanish-speaking construction workers are eager to grow their knowledge.

His work is already gaining traction. He’s taught blueprint reading courses to industry professionals.

“Life Asset is part of that vision,” he says. “Their support— financial and emotional support has been key. They’ve helped me keep going.”

Álvaro’s Advice to Aspiring Entrepreneurs

“When you see a problem, and you have an idea to solve it, don’t just leave it there,” he says. “Act on it. Try to help others. If it’s for a good cause, it will work out.”

Álvaro’s story is a powerful reminder that entrepreneurship isn’t just about starting a business. It’s about seeing a need, building solutions, and using your knowledge to lift others.

Álvaro is creating more than a magazine; he’s building bridges between languages, careers, and communities, one page at a time.
